Linguistic Diversity Management in Urban Areas - LiMA

The Research Cluster aims to bring together existing top-level expertise in multilingualism (linguistics, education sciences) at the University of Hamburg and to combine and focus this expertise on the investigation of migration-induced multilingualism as found in urban centers worldwide.
It will investigate whether and in what way migration-induced multilingualism can be translated into advantages for individuals and society and into benefits for the cultural and economic development of urban centers.

The city of Hamburg will serve as a model for an international comparison of similar urban centers.
The Cluster will implement extensive and interdisciplinary graduate training and establish an International Graduate School together with the University of Calgary.
